What about "HDTV" antennas they sell at the electronic chain stores, won't these work?

Maybe, The quality of the antennas sold in many chain stores is not as good what a company that specializes in HDTV antennas can offer. Many are not designed as well and are not made with the same quality material like some other antennas like the Terrestrial Digital Line.
